You should always have good tires on your vehicle. Unfortunately, many major auto accidents happen because of worn out or damaged tires. Of course, like most car owners, you also don’t want to be spending tons of your hard-earned cash on a new set of tires every other year.
We have good news for you. There are some simple steps you can take that will help you dramatically extend the life of your tires. At Elite RV & Car Care, our tire and wheel services team knows the importance of proper tire care. Here, we share four helpful tips to making your tires last for as long as possible.
When is the last time you checked your vehicle’s tire pressures? For many Texas drivers, the answer is somewhere between “years ago” and “never”. This is a mistake. To best protect your tires, you should be checking your air pressure on a monthly basis. As you put miles on your car, it is normal for your tires to slowly lose pressure. Additionally, the changing temperatures can mess with your tire pressure. Not only will driving on improperly inflated tires cause your tires to develop uneven tread, but it will also increase your risk of an accident due to things like your car pulling to one side of the road or another, drifting and high speed blowouts.
Your tires will wear out with different patterns, and at different rates. Typically, if you have a front wheel drive, your front tires will wear out far more quickly than your back tires. As such, you should be sure to regularly rotate your tires. This will help you have even wear, extending the life of all of your tires. As a general rule, it is recommended that you have your tires rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. What some SUV, van and truck drivers do, specifically offroad enthusiasts, when they buy new tires is purchase a 5th tire as a spare, and rotate it with the other tires.
When you take your vehicle in for a tire rotation, it is a good time to ask about wheel balancing. No tire, no matter how new, is perfectly balanced. To ensure even wear and tear, you auto mechanic will need to re-balance your tires. By doing this simple task, you can extend the lifespan of your tires (and wheel bearings) and your ride will be a lot smoother as well.
Finally, it is also important to have your car’s wheel alignment checked. Does your vehicle pull slightly to the left or to the right? If so, your alignment is almost certainly a little bit off. Among other things, this misalignment will affect your overall tire wear. Get the alignment problem fixed and enjoy a vehicle that tracks straight and tires that last.
