Four Things to Check to Make Sure Your Vehicle is Ready for a Texas Summer

There are few things hotter than summer in Southeast Texas. Each year, the City of Houston averages nearly 100 days in which the afternoon high temperature exceeds 90 degrees. Of course, the humidity can make it feel much hotter than that. Extreme temperatures aren’t just hard on people, they are stressful on automobiles.

As a vehicle owner, you need to be sure that your car is ready for the scorching summer, especially if you have little ones in car seats. At Elite RV & Car Care, our skilled auto repair technicians are proud to provide top-rated automotive services to customers in Humble, Atascocita, Kingwood and throughout the region. Here, we offer a list of four things you should do to make sure that your car is prepared.

Change Your Oil

You likely already know one of the most basic car care tips: be sure that you change your oil regularly. The importance of regular oil changes cannot be overstated. Old, degraded oil puts a tremendous amount of stress on a vehicle’s engine. As high temperatures can already put a lot of extra pressure on a car’s key components, it is especially important that you get your vehicle’s oil changed before summer kicks into its highest gear.

Check Your Coolant

Your vehicle’s coolant system will be required to work overtime in the Texas summer to ensure that your car does not overheat. Do you know when you last changed your coolant? It should generally be changed every one or two years. If you cannot remember the last time you have had it changed, now is a great time to get your car serviced.

Make Sure Your A/C is Working

No one wants to drive around southeast Texas without a working air conditioning system, especially in busy or hectic traffic conditions. It will help you keep your cool in addition to staying comfortable. If you have not used it much recently, now is a good time to test it out. If you need air conditioning service or repair, you will want to get that scheduled sooner rather than later as many auto repair shops grow busy when the first heat wave comes. Some cars are equipped with two cooling systems. One for the front of the car, and one for the rear. Occasionally the rear AC system will stop blowing cold air, sometimes unbeknownst to the driver, so if you are transporting little ones in either front or rear facing car seats, it’s important to keep close tabs to ensure the kiddos are kept comfortable in the heat.

Get Your Tires Inspected

Finally, one of the summer car care tips that many people do not consider is getting your tires inspected. Changes in outdoor temperature and humidity levels causes the air pressure in a car’s tires to change as well. If you are driving on tires that have too much or too little air pressure, you could have a major problem on your hands. Not only will you wear your tires out far more quickly, but it can also be highly dangerous. And of course, the roads are slickest when it begins to rain, so make sure you have adequate tread on your tires to get you safely through those summer rainstorms.
